Deep in the jungles of Central America and surrounded by ancient temples spiritual totems is this online slot machine themed on the once great Aztec civilisation and developed by Pragmatic Play; it’s called Aztec Bonanza and it offers players tumbling reels, mystery symbols, free spins and a potentially huge number of paylines.
Aztec bonanza is a five reel slot with up to rows and a potential 7776 paylines; the gold and bejewelled totem stands to the right hand side while the huge temple is just visible behind the pale blue water on the left hand side.
The higher value symbols are gems engraved in stone with gold corners while the lower values are more gems and playing card symbols in stone but without the gold accessory. The golden mask is the Mystery Symbol.

Tumbling Reels & Free Spins
Aztec Bonanza uses tumbling reels which means that any symbols in a winning combo will disappear and be replaced by more falling down from above; every two successive tumbles will break open a corner to unlock more paylines – paylines start at 384 and end up with 7776 when all reels are unlocked after eight tumbles. Every two tumbles also triggers a small feature:
- Two Tumbles – the top left is uncovered and revealed as the Mystery Symbol which will then transform into a paying one.
- Four Tumbles – the top right corner is unlocked and up to three low value symbols are replaced by higher value ones.
- Six Tumbles – the bottom left corner is unlocked reels one and two only contain large, 2×2 symbols.
- Eight Tumbles – the bottom right corner is unlocked reels four and five only contain large, 2×2 symbols.
Clearing all the corners will also trigger the free spins round and here you’ll receive five spins with each spin awarding one of the above features. It’s not possible to trigger more spins from within this round.
Verdict
Aztec Bonanza is quite possibly our favourite Pragmatic Play slot to date – the gameplay makes you feel as though your playing inside one long feature with the free spins and big wins never too far away. It’s like the love child of Net Ent’s Gonzo’s Quest and Reel Rush and that can only be a good thing.
