Katana is an online slot machine from Novomatic and one so stylish it needs just a one word title; a Katana is a traditional hand-made Japanese sword and this slot is full of Oriental character and mysticism. There’s no shortage of slots in this particular genre but there’s always room for one more, especially one as good-looking as this.
Katana features five reels and twenty paylines and the style is Japanese through and through right down to the polished wood on which the reels are placed. A Japanese garden and wooden bridge are just visible in the misty background.
The symbols all look classy and the main ones are Japanese temples, a mounted warrior with a flag, archers and the female lead. Minor symbols are 10, J, Q, K and A in a Kanji style and the bonus symbols are the shaven headed Shogan wild and the Katana swords scatter.
Bonus Features
Free Spins
Nothing wrong with a few free spins when you’re spinning the reels and you can win yourself ten such spins by landing three of more of the Katana scatter symbols anywhere on the reels.
You can also take advantage of the Shogun Bonus at this point; he’s the wild symbol and he becomes an expanding wild during the free spins if he contributes to a winning combination. He will substitute for everything apart from scatter symbols. More free spins can be triggered by landing more scatters while in this round.
Gamble Feature
If just spinning the reels isn’t enough of a gamble for you then each time you land a win you can wager that sum on the turn of a playing card.
Just click the ‘Gamble’ button and you’ll be whisked to a Japanese-looking card game and asked to decide whether the next card will be red or black. A correct pick will double your money and you can carry on as long as keep winning; lose and it’s straight back to the reels with no money.
Verdict
Katana looks fabulous and has some beautiful graphics to complement some smoothly scrolling reels; the soundtrack isn’t particularly Japanese but that doesn’t detract from the gameplay at all.
