Spartacus is a brand new online slot from WMS Gaming, purveyor of some of the finest games around and it’s of a slightly unusual style which we’ve seen from this company before.  The full title of this slot is Spartacus, Gladiator of Rome and our hero was probably the best known of the leaders of the gladiator rebellion which took place in Rome between 73 – 71 BC.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the action on the screen takes place over two sets of reels with a combined number of paylines totalling one hundred.  The leftmost set contains five rows and there are an impressive twelve on the right.  WMS Gaming calls this feature ‘Colossal Reels’ and it’s not hard to see why.

The main symbols are Spartacus himself plus two more gladiators, a lion, a helmet and a sword; the minor, less valuable symbols are a pink diamond, a purple club, a red heart and a blue spade.

Bonus symbols include a Spartacus wild and a Colosseum scatter which triggers the free spins.

Stacked Symbols

Many of the symbols are stacked on both sets of reels in Gladiator and this helps to make it easier to create winning combinations. Stacked symbols mean that the symbols appear on top of each other on the reels.  The Spartacus wild is also stacked but has an extra feature as explained below.

Stacked Wild

When the wild appears stacked and covering a whole reel on the smaller set of reels, a copy transfers itself to the corresponding reel on the Colossal set, again covering the whole thing.  In our experience this is an efficient way to make some money.

Free Spins

You can trigger this feature on either set of reels by landing the Colosseum scatter on reels one, three and five. As there’s two reels you can land more than three and if you do you’ll get the following:

• Five scatters – 20 free spins + 20x total bet
• Four scatters – 12 free spins + 5x total bet
• Three scatters – 8 free spins + 2x total bet

During this feature, if part of a stacked wild lands on the main reels, the rest of the stack will be nudged into place.  It will then copy itself over to the Colossal reels to help make more combos.  More free spins can be won during the free spins feature.

Verdict
